Directions

This week, we will be in smaller groups of 10-12 for our discussion. To help you prepare for the Unit 1 Timed Essay, consider and choose one of the twelve steps of the Hero’s Journey, explain it and then illustrate it with a quoted passage from one of our Unit 1 stories (Beowulf: The Graphic Novel, “Scheherazade,” or “Zlateh the Goat”). Your initial post should be at least 250 words. Before you begin the assignment, please read and review the pages Unit 1 Timed Essay Preparation and Integrating Sources: Step-by-Step.

• • • Begin the paragraph with a clear topic sentence.
    • Choose, introduce, and explain one step of the “Hero’s Journey” by providing a quote from “Hero’s Journey 101,” which is a required secondary source for the Unit 1 Timed Essay.
    • Explain the connection between the step of the “Hero’s Journey” and a particular scene in the story you’ve chosen to write about
    • Provide context (background information from the story) for the quoted passage from the story
    • Introduce the quoted passage (develop a link/lead-in between the background information and the quote )
    • Quote the passage
    • Using MLA format , include a parenthetical citation at the end of the quoted passage (be sure to only refer to the sources/versions provided in our modules)
      • Beowulf: The Graphic Novel–use author’s last name and PDF page number (Stern 8)
      • “Zlateh the Goat”–use author’s last name and page number (Singer 4)
      • “Scheherazade”–no author; use title of story in quotation marks and page number (“Scheherazade” 2)
    • Explain how the quoted passageillustrates the step of the Hero’s Journey as explained in Hero’s Journey 101
      • Select and explain specific details from the quoted passage to further illustrate your explanation
      • When analyzing, indicate what is important about the borrowed information and how it connects to the idea of the Hero’s Journey in the paragraph
